Other defensive plays:

A few that come to mind that may be worth looking into if you want to stay invested over the summer:

(1) Tyco International (TYC): a budding General Electric in the making. A conglomerate with one of the most aggressive and smartest CEO's (Dennis Kozlowski) in business. Just named on Merrill Lynch's "Ten Uncommon Values" list. Widely diversified into four very different market segments.

(2) Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF): same story as Lowe's. Every time I'm in the store, it is crowded, with merchandise moving rapidly. Rapidly expanding and starting a new chain of stores aimed at pre-teens. According to Salomon Smith Barney, estimated 5-yr EPS growth rate of 30% with current PE of 33. Also, a Merrill Lynch "Uncommon Value" pick.

(3) Staples: Has growth rate of 25% per year for last 4 or 5 years and is in a relatively bullet-proof sector. Again, excellent management and execution. Only caveat: it is richly valued (high PE) but not (IMHO) inappropriate for its consistent performance.

Jr, worked on a home improvement this past Fourth of July weekend and I visited Lowe's each day...kept going back for more stuff for the project. Each day they were busy... look for them to have a nice third Q. I did my part. <g>
