You are correct. The May edition of PC World has an article about where laptops come from.
DELL buys theirs from Copal and Quanta of Taiwan. The article says the DELL Inspiron 3500 and the Quantex T-1410 are virtually identical.
Gateway buys theirs from Sanyo and Quanta.
The article may be in the PC World archives online by now.

The Inspiron 7000 and the Quantex notebook are identical machines both made in Taiwan.
