I'm guessing that the lost data concern only applies to those programs you, the human user, are working with. The background stuff can be stopped without YOU losing anything of value.

Hint: I boot my system without starting the background stuff. That way, I don't worry about stopping anything. Sometimes these programs get 'sticky' and don't want to quit.

P.S. I've never encountered a SystemWorks problem even though I've left the background stuff running. One exception: I couldn't install SystemWorks with Tweak-UI influencing my system although SystemWorks and Tweak-UI co-operate OK once installed.
