RE: "how about the service business"

Joseph,

I think that's a good summary of IBM: good service.

Maybe IBM could transition even further into a service model by providing service to customers who migrate to the IA-platform?

Seems like that would work for both Intel and IBM.

Regards,
Amy J

Joseph,

Re: what about service

Yes, there is certainly nothing wrong with being a service company and that is where IBM is headed. It can be profitable and it can fuel growth....but will IBM's current cost structure afford it?? The conversion from a large hadware/manufacturing company to a service company is complicated and IMO will be cause for much consternation in the future. Whether this strategy will ultimately be successful is yet to be seen.

I guess this is what they mean by beauty being in the eye of the beholder.

P.S. Since IBM's focus does seem to be shifting towards service, why do you think they sold IBMNet to ATT??? I was very surprised by the move.
