An excellent summary of the issues at hand!

IMHO:

1. Technology will never "force" anyone to do anything. Technology is a collection of artifacts. People make choices. People force issues.

2. The individual's right to privacy needs to be balanced against the group's right to conduct a discussion.

3. A certain amount of individual privacy is forfeited by participating in a public discussion -- one reveals what would be otherwise private thoughts, ideas, and so on, in a public forum the records of which have permanence.

4. The right to privacy does not and should not excuse one from experiencing the consequences of their participation in a public discussion. Accountability to the group becomes superior to privacy as soon as one participates in the activities of the group.

5. Anonymity does not equal privacy. Anonymity is a privilege (whether granted or purchased), while privacy is a right.

6. Courtesy, fair play and justice require notification of the individual when one's right to privacy or one's privilege of anonymity must be forfeited by order of a court of competent jurisdiction or some similar authority.

7. I have purchased a service which includes anonymity. If that anonymity must be breached, I should be notified.

The above is the result of my brain working the matter over. Your results may vary.

Thanks for listening.

Anonymity

I have made a few posts on this subject and I think my own stance is clear. Credibility is more than a surface issue. The reader is the person who ultimately decides. Readers have to decide who is telling the truth and who isn't.
Credibility is an earned thing, I don't find people credible because they have Email addresses, or I can confirm their identity. We define ourselves here, and the record is real.
I find people credible when they assume dimension in my mind through their posts. Foremost is always agenda. It does pay to be wary on SI and to scrutinize.
I expect SI to keep my name private and I am fairly certain that this has been the case. If they were required to divulge my name (and I couldn't imagine that happening) then I would expect some type of notice. Anonymous or not, the issue is and always will be agenda. Agenda works both ways. Ultimately I am accountable to myself.

As a POWERFUL BASHER I live in perpetual fear of people finding out that I am a typical small investor speaking my mind. My agenda is clear, find a sponsor for the "Party in Vegas"

This topic is a very extensive one.
