Greg: FWIW I wasn't speaking of "painting the tape" or posting fictitious trades that hadn't really taken place. I was referring to a MM selling small amounts of stock at or below the best posted bid in an exploratory frame of mind. A good trader has a "feel" for his stock and he knows that sometimes in an uncertain market such sales below the best bid will spook weak traders. This kind of exploratory activity is described in at least one trading treatise.
