Methanol Producers Promote In-home Fuel Cells
EarthVision Reports

07/08/99

TORONTO, July 8, 1999 - The Canadian company Methanex is teaming up with
Europe's leading methanol producer, Statoil, and US.-based Northwest Power
Systems to encourage the commercialization of methanol-based fuel cells as a
household power source. Oxy-Fuel News reported that the three companies plan to
collaborate on two pilot projects designed to show methanol powered fuel cells can be
a viable option for effectively bringing electricity and heat to homes. The first pilot
project involves several homes in Bend, Oregon that will be disconnected from the
electricity grid during 1999 and will instead be fitted with methanol powered fuel cells
that can supply heat and electricity. In the second project, a metals fabricator in Albany,
Oregon will obtain pure hydrogen from methanol reformer advances developed by
Northwest Power Systems.
