This article on AT&T reminds me of a question I've had for a long time:

We all know that the G* phones are multi-mode; I believe they can also be set to automatically seek a terrestrial signal, and if none is found, access the space segment without any additional user instructions. But, if you've once established a call on a terrestrial system, and the signal fades out, will the phone seamlessly switch to space mode? That sounds too good to be true....but that's what it would take to satisfy the author's complaint about intermittant terrestrial links...otherwise he'd have to be in sat mode continuously, with a corresponding price premium.
