Jim,

Rambus communicates with memory via a Rambus Channel. Speed can be increased by an increasing the channel clock rate. Bandwidth can be increased by adding additional channels. And you could increase both the clock rate and the number of channels.

And one of the things that makes Rambus special is the use of terminated transmission lines. If they are properly implemented, there are no reflections of fast signal edges, unlike any other interconnection technology. This will make it possible to increase the clock rate in the future by a much greater amount than will be possible for other technologies.

Doing this may, however, require much higher quality printed circuit boards than hitherto, both in terms of dimensional accuracy and constancy of dielectric constant. Constant impedance connectors will be harder to make, and it might be necessary to bring a transmission line structure onto and off the chip again for each signal to avoid reflections caused by bond wires forming stubs that load the transmission line. I can envisage techniques such as this allowing clock frequencies of many GHz in a few years time.
