UMBER NINE'S SR9 GRAPHICS ACCELERATOR CHOSEN FOR NEW IBM(R) APTIVA(R) COMPUTERS SR9 NOW SHIPPING IN BOTH COMMERCIAL AND CONSUMER SYSTEMS
LEXINGTON, Mass., Jul 8, 1999 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Number Nine Visual Technology Corp. (Nasdaq: NINE), a leader in high-performance PC graphics and visual technology, today announced that its SR9 graphics accelerator has been selected and is now shipping in select new models of the Aptiva E Series of computers from International Business Machine (NYSE: IBM), one of the world's largest PC vendors.
The SR9 graphics accelerator is now shipping in IBM's recently announced Aptiva E Series Models 545 and 585 line of computers. Aptiva computers are one of the best selling PC platforms for consumers worldwide.

Number Nine is offering the SR9 in multiple configurations and form factors. This flexible approach is proving to be attractive to system builders who want to offer a common graphics solution that can span the needs of both corporate users running Windows NT 4.0 and home or small business users running Windows 98.

This strategy is already showing results. Only weeks earlier, Number Nine announced that the SR9 was shipping in select models of IBM's PC 300PL, one of the world's best selling PC platforms for business.

"These design wins are significant for Number Nine," said Wallace Smith, Number Nine's new President and Chief Executive Officer. "The product's unique versatility, Number Nine's 2D and 3D display drivers for various operating systems and built-in provisions for upcoming graphics related technologies make the SR9 an excellent value for both corporate and consumer oriented systems."

Users of Aptiva systems equipped with the SR9 will experience the visual difference -- graphically speaking. Applications will feel more responsive. The entire 3D experience will be far more realistic and lifelike in appearance. And for the multimedia enthusiasts, second-generation motion compensation allows the latest DVD movies to be viewed at full-screen, with laser sharp detail, all without having to use an expensive, dedicated MPEG-2 decoder card.

SR9 graphics accelerators are equipped with the S3 (Nasdaq: SIII) Savage4(TM) processor and configured with 8-, 16- or 32-megabytes of memory. The SR9 delivers pure 128-bit graphics processing power for fast 2D acceleration, 32-bit true color 3D rendering, and real-time 3D Texture Compression for a level of 3D quality that sets a new standard for image excellence. Prepared for the future now, SR9 graphics accelerators were the first shipping products with announced AGP 4X support. AGP 4X equipped computers are expected to ship later this year. These systems will allow graphics tobe transferred from the host CPU to the graphics accelerator at twice thespeeds of today's existing AGP 2X enabled systems.

Leading the industry, the SR9 was also the first graphics accelerator to demonstrate support for the DVI (Digital Visual Interface) specification, the anticipated industry standard connector for communicating to both analog and digital display devices.

The SR9 provides built-in support for standard glass monitors (analog) and the new breed of advanced, digitally fed LCD displays. To facilitate the various digital interfaces that currently exist, Number Nine provides simple, easy-to-install snap-on digital interface modules with support forDFP, Plug & Display and new DVI (Digital Visual Interface) enabled digital displays. The SR9 is capable of providing a digitally-pure video signal for displays with resolutions up to 1280 x 1024.

The SR9 is bundled with Number Nine's advanced HawkEye(R) Display Control Utilities and custom, 3D accelerated display drivers for Windows '95 and Windows '98. Fully certified accelerated 3D support for Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 is provided via Number Nine's OpenGL(R) ICD display drivers.
