gary, You have a scientific mind -- are you in the field? Your perceptions of the data are all exact. The simian model is the only model for HIV. AIDSVAX was 100% effective. AIDSVAX produces humoral antibodies. The chimps were protected. Therefore what protected the chimps? Humoral antibodies. AIDSVAX elicits high levels of humoral antibodies in humans. Therefore?? Some opponents claim that you cannot fill in the blank here. They have esoteric THEORETICAL explanations. Dr. Francis has said, in public, many times, that if Jonas Salk had waited until the theory fit the vaccine -- we'd still have polio rife in the population. You are also correct about the phase III trials. There will be a time when they are broken down -- before the trials end -- and the data will be explored (see: Hepatitis B vaccine trials -- same thing happened).
