I imagine that that is the primary effect (intent, even?) of organizations like Greenpeace and Earth First. They serve to put these issues on the evening news. Very efficient "consciousness raising" strategy.
My only lament about those two groups is that they tend to be sweepingly antitechnological on top of being champions of the wilderness
