<<The decision to resume production comes following a much publicized flight of a pair of Tu-160s along the Norwegian coast on June 25th, 1999. Two Russian Tu-95 strategic bombers flew near Iceland on the same day as part of the West '99 military exercises - largest in Russia in the last decade. Both bomber groups were met by NATO fighter jets, but not before the bombers came within the range required to fire nuclear cruise missiles at the United States and turned back to Russia. This was an impressive illustration of ineffectiveness of NATO air defenses.
