Palm-size billboard? 3Com Corp. officials think they
have found a new way to exploit the PalmPilot and the
wireless Internet service that comes with the latest version of
the pocket computer. They hope to extract payments from
information and electronic services that want a prime
position on the Palm VII's tiny display screen.

Icons for content
suppliers, including ABC
News and E-Trade, now
pop up when users log
on to the Palm.Net
access service under
noncash "co-marketing"
arrangements with 3Com.
But Eric Benhamou,
3Com's chief executive
officer, is considering renting those prime positions, and
allowing content suppliers to place tiny logo-style ads in
clipped Web pages that appear on the devices -- with some
proceeds going to 3Com. The Palm's 2 3/8-by-2 3/8-inch
screen could become "the most expensive real estate in the
world," Mr. Benhamou says.

But not for a while. Another 3Com official says the
company would like to start charging for placement when it
has 100,000 subscribers to Palm.Net, a target it hopes to
achieve by next summer. For now, Palm.Net is available
only in the New York area and has "several thousand"
subscribers, says Mr. Benhamou.
