Re ORCL. They've been emphasizing applications development for awhile, putting them right in the field with sebl, peoplesoft, etc. as they roll out their specific applications, which are based on their rdbms. Because they have such penetration in companies already, they have a leg up in additional implementations.

Also, their position as the primary supplier of databases to the e-commerce crowd gives them a big advantage.

The knock on orcl has been their erratic earnings history. They have somewhat regularly disappointed. (Which QCOM did also, if memory serves). But last quarter was surprisingly strong for orcl, and we saw a quick 15-20 pct runup to its present level.

Another plus is that Ellison seems to be tending to business, instead of going off sailing.

I believe orcl can handily meet long term earnings projections, at the same time starting to gain significant business at the erp vendors' expense. That will make them more dominant than they are now.

If I understand correctly, oracle's using their entrenched position in one market (its oracle product) to push its way into adjoining areas might qualify it as a gorilla. And I see little downside.

Will a tornado occur? Orcl's stock has a long history of disappointing. So, i don't know.

I had the privilege last week of seeing ORCL put together a comprehensive ERP proposal and 3-day demo to a very large prospect. i was impressed by:

A) the multidisciplinary team pulled together in a couple of days
B?) the leadership that got the team working toward a common set of goals using common language and presentation templates
C) the ERP software, especially the web-based apps. Very powerful, very beautiful interfaces.
D) the way in which ORCL CAI partners were brought in to almost seemlessly fill the gaps that ORCL's solutions didn't quite cover

The competition is SAP and PSFT. I did not see their efforts, co can't compare.

ORCL being mentioned more as a viable competitor to both CTXS and SEBL.

In the relatively short and near term, I don't think Oracle is a tremendous competitor of either. Over the long term, anything can happen.

As for competing with Siebel, I'm still waiting to hear from anyone who works in the industry to mention a CRM customer of Oracle that can be used as a reference for other potential customers.
