>>true - especially in an environment where you have nadda pc rev growth and 20% unit increases. cost is important.<<

skeeter,
you suggest no pc growth. dataquest projects pc sales at...

2000...145,000,000 units

2001...170,000,000

2002...205,000,000

also important to note that:
rambus in workstations is nearly here. the general manager of dell workstations has already stated that the new dell workstation to be released this september will use rambus.
lsi logic started shipping rambus enabled asic samples about 8-10 weeks ago. i look for testing to be completed and orders to start rolling in any day now.
sony pII with rambus will be unveiled in approx 60 days in japan and go on sale throughout asia. coming to n. america next year.
the new nintendo machine will be released soon. it is being designed by ibm and matsushita. think about this. ibm is going to be mfr and using rambus. the ceo of matsushita (panasonic) stated a few months ago that they were designing a full array of consumer products to use rambus technology. wonder what nintendo will use? wonder what panasonic hdtv, etc will use?
sony and toshiba have spent $1 billion this year to build a rambus rdram-d production facility. think that is all for playstation? i don't. toshiba is the world's largest laptop maker...think we may see rambus in laptops? i do. as well as sony hdtv's, hd dvd's, copiers, scanners, and sony pc's.
did you know ti is using rambus technology "now" for high speed telephone equipment?
oh yes, let's not forget servers. intel stated about 2 months ago that they have an intensive program underway to qualify rambus for servers.
and they all pay royalties to rmbs. isn't that great?!!!!!!!!
