From the latest calculations...

Assuming that the current market cap of the S&P500 is around 11 trillion dollars, and the index is based on market cap of the individual companies.

If Qualcomm has a cap of 21 billion dollars, then the percentage is roughly .0019 or .19%. Now if you accept that the current amount of S&P500 index funds is around 180 billion dollars. I can't remember where I got that number however. Then the funds would have to buy .0019 * 180 billion which equals 342 million dollars of shares. At the current price, that would be about 2.4 million shares (at 142/share).

Now if you believe that the total amount of pension and index funds tracking the S&P 500 is around $700 billion, then the funds would have to buy 9.36 million shares. Wow, that must share some shorts.

I've just started to study Qualcomm after reading the ever insightful George Gilder and should have bought more except for the 2 call contracts for Aug. Looks like I will pick some up in the a.m.

Also, the current short is about 18 million, I wonder how much covering will occur on top of the funds buying.

Finally done lurking. Amazingly, I was studying this aspect of Q being added to the S&P just two days ago.

Later

Quiet share holder for the past month! what a nice surprise. I was in AOL last winter when it's addition to the S&P was announced, this should be like rocket fuel with earnings coming up and the bonds going below 6%.
Congratulations to all.
