Jean... (this is "OT" to others, but maybe of interest) --

I don't know how much help this will be, but I recently installed an A-D-S-L line -- and I can't even imagine now how I got along without it. It's made an incredible difference in my stock-trading and monitoring abilities (with my old modem, I had to wait FOREVER for things to display as I moved back-and-forth between trading screens -- and I couldn't run some programs at all because they tied my relatively-old computer in knots) -- not to mention the fact that I can now download a 15-MB file from the Internet in about three minutes instead of an hour-and-half...

So if you're considering a cable Internet hookup, but live in an area where D-S-L is also available, I'd suggest doing a close comparison of the two systems to figure out which would really be best for you.

Note that D-S-L is in fact much FASTER than a cable connection -- and depending on where you live and who provides the service, it might even be cheaper or at least not much more expensive.

My own D-S-L "package" runs $49/month -- but that INCLUDES full-time Internet access (which meant I could dump my old $18/month ISP), AND because the D-S-L hookup is a "split" data/voice line, it has the effect of giving me a second phone line (I can now be on-line and still use the phone -- which avoids the costs of a separate phone line, which I would've had to install otherwise). So overall, it's really only costing me about $20/month more than I'd be paying without it -- and it's made a WORLD of difference (in fact, I'd originally thought I'd have to buy a new computer to handle my online investing activities -- but the addition of the D-S-L line and an extra 16MB of RAM have now made my old machine purr like a kitten).

Just wanted to make sure you consider the D-S-L option, IF it's available to you (in case anyone doesn't know this: receiving D-S-L service doesn't depend only on having some company make it available in your area -- with the present technology, you also have to live within about five miles of a main telephone-company exchange)...

I've got the cable. Two outages in 4 months. Have Flashnet as a backup for $5.95 mo. Really like the speed of the cable. No waiting and one less phone line.
Kind regards,
DD
