Morgan, that must be caused by the "long term investment habits". When I consider my grandpa's, who put aside monies and didn't look at them for years, basically I can imagine that. That folks are quite the opposite of us in terms of holding periods as well as risk perception. (We live in good times. When my grand-grandpa was roughly my age it was the government who talked the folks into war loans, later reconstruction loans which were never repaid, or devalued to nil by the following hyperinflation of the 20ies). If you lived in a town where all people are wearing yellow hats, whom would you go to, if someone told you, guys wearing yellow hats are thieves, for sure?
