It would be preferable for IDTC to file a lawsuit as you suggest since that would show they are outraged by the article.

Only if you want every short selling analyst in the country descending upon IDTC. Any company that goes through the trouble of suing is critics is sending this clear message: "We are more concerned with short-term fluctuations in our stock price than with how we are running our business".

You don't see Microsoft going around suing every computer columnist who points out how awful their operating systems are, how evil their monopoly power is, etc. Good companies let their business execution speak for itself.
