Amit:

Re: The 'wise' ones says : merced may slip further.
Article at : news.com;

"Intel denies that the schedule has slipped, saying that the company is still on track to produce the chips in volume midway through 2000. The first Merced prototypes aren't due for several weeks, but the company remains on schedule to get samples out in mid-1999 and chips into volume production in mid-2000, according to Ron Curry, director of marketing for the IA-64 processor division."

Curry seems to be directly and forcefully contradicting the title and premise of the article. Until proven otherwise, I'll take his word for it.

Merced has been rumored to be a test vehicle for a long time. The
true product will be McKinley (from HP). The Merced chip has been plague by
delay because of the complexity and enormity of the project. Intel had about
600 people committed to project. I heard from some friends it was a management
nightmare. The management was very inexperience for such a large project.

Ron Curry, the only named source, in the article denies its premise. Who are the "sources" and "analysts" ? How "wise" is it to listen to unnamed talking heads?
