Having lived in New York City, the Bay Area and LA, I think I can comment.

When DRD got themselves started they were virtually the only chain drug store which operated much in New York City (certainly the only one in Manhattan). The were virtually the only alternative to smaller and more expensive neighborhood stores. Due to size constraints, supermarkets and other outlets we would consider "normal" out here never got in the prescription pharmacy biz.

These days RAD is in that market quite heavily with nice stores and semi-helpful staff. (Always relative, in New York.) And new construction has meant more modern retail space for other types of competitors.

I agree with you on growth. Their position is mostly as a regional chain, and they are unlikely to be able to grow out of the region.

On the other hand, I can see them being a buyout target for a regional or super-regional player wanting to establish themselves in New York City. (CVS maybe?) Still, it's unlikely to happen at current price levels.

Interesting side-story. DRD was started and run for many years by a guy by the name of Lew Lerhman. A successful businessman, he was one of the more laughable candidates the Republicans put up against Cuomo at his peak. Famous for his red suspenders and not much else.

He worked briefly at Morgan Stanley Asset Management after the governorship campaign. I worked on the same floor for a brief period. Used to see him and Biggs together...
