Fonix Text-To-Speech Technology Used in General Magic'sNew myTalk E-Mail Service

SALT LAKE CITY, July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Fonix Corporation (Nasdaq: FONX), today said that the Company's AcuVoice text-to-speech software is being used in the new myTalk(TM) e-mail service offered by General Magic(TM), Inc. General Magic also uses the Fonix AcuVoice speech synthesizer in its Portico(TM) voice-driven virtual assistant service. The Fonix AcuVoice text-to-speech software supplies the synthetic speech used in myTalk and Portico for reading e-mail and other text information.

General Magic launched myTalk, mytalk.com, on June 15, 1999. It is a free, ad-supported Internet service that lets people use their own spoken words, any telephone and a toll-free number to access and respond to their e-mail. The Fonix text-to-speech software reads the e-mail messages to the user. The Portico fee service allows mobile professionals to access a variety of information including e-mail, voice mail, calendar and stock data, over the telephone or Internet.

"We are very pleased to collaborate with General Magic and to provide an integral software component for their product lines," said Thomas A. Murdock, President and Chief Executive Officer of Fonix. "Our relationship with General Magic reflects the Fonix strategy: to market software products that make natural human interaction with the Internet, computers, hand-held computing devices, cellular and smart-phones and other intelligent appliances simpler and easier. The Fonix AcuVoice text-to-speech technology is available for high value end-user products and applications, such as Portico and myTalk. Revenues generated from strategic alliances such as General Magic are consistent with our business strategy to license our technology to create recurring revenues for the Company."

"The initial response to myTalk has been terrific, and users are telling us they really find value in being able to hear their e-mail over the phone," said Rich Ghiossi, Vice President of Product Marketing at General Magic. "By using the Fonix AcuVoice text-to-speech software in myTalk and Portico, we are able to provide our users with the services they need to easily keep in touch with important information."
