IcyGual, Gee, I sure hope you are wrong. Never heard of ripping. . .appreciate the info. Frankly, I think that the consortium with Sony, EMI, VO and others should just buy their way clear. Buy MP3. . .add encoding to it. . . .buy DIMD. . . these are hardly very expensive companies, considering the tens of billions that are threatened long-term. The industry realizes that hacks will be hacks. . .and will always find a way to cheat the system. But they are mostly interested in keeping this format out of the mainstream. Ultimately I am convinced that it will breed mediocrity, should MP3 flourish and become say as big as the CD. Why? Because the great songwriters that write all those songs everyone loves. . . .and the great artists that record and perform them better than anyone else can. . . . their livlihood will be seriously threatened. As an artist, when you stop making money doing what you do. . . you find some other artistic outlet that does pay. Yes there will be more bands. . . more unknown songwriters. . .and more unknown artists. . . .but believe me. . . that will not be good. I used to be sent hundreds of tapes per week, and served on the faculty of Los Angeles Songwriter Showcase, LASS, one of the largest songwriter organizations in America. And while there were several deserving writers that couldn't get a break. . . by and large, the demos I received were real garbage. Take Nashville for instance. 250 songwriters writing all the hits for nearly every major artist in town and making a great living. 2500 songwriters signed with publishers and have songs placed, and are making a small amount of money on occassion. 25,000 "professional" unsigned songwriters waiting to get discovered by the right artist or publisher. 250,000 wannabe songwriters that would love for you to hear their demo. Similarly, LA has 75,000 organized bands with demos in hand . . .all unsigned. And for good reason. Who is going to sort through the hundreds of thousands of bands, to try to find one worth listening to. . . should MP3 be the preferred format? For the good of music, in general. . . we all NEED to pay the songwriters and artists for the music they make. And with MP3. . .NOBODY gets paid. Simple as that. If it takes a war with hackers to do it. . .so be it. Icy. . .you know I pull no punches. I very much appreciate your discussion and argument. . . this is how we learn. Rande Is
