Or at least that's the stereotype, one that's so widely held that we tend to assume that most male artists are (at the very least) latent.

I don't believe this. The creative energy of the heterosexual male is more likely to be channeled into creating and sustaining a family than into creating aesthetic masterworks. Few heterosexual males can resist the procreative urge, and once we submit and creative urges that once existed are instantly subordinated to a continuous chorus of material demands.

Homosexuals, being social outcasts to begin with, are also much less likely to be concerned with the pressure that is applied to make one get a decent, respectable, job and establish a place in society. These are goals that the creative rarely attain, unless they are successful, which most are not.
