I don't doubt that for a minute. I didn't say that the male drive to compete, succeed, and excel is based on a conscious belief that this will bring women flocking round them. If it did, and if men only strove to succeed in fields that are likely to draw female attention, many things that desperately need doing would never be done. I do think that the instinctive male drive to succeed, to excel, to stand out from the pack is rooted in the same place as the sexual drive, and that if we trace it back to root causes, it is based on the instinct that excellence will increase value in the sexual marketplace. In fact, of course, excellence frequently does not, but instinct hasn't caught on yet. Let's hope it doesn't.
