Dell'Oro Launches New Research Segments
Research for DSL and Cable Modem Markets are Now Available
Both Markets Show Growth in 1Q99
PORTOLA VALLEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 12, 1999--Dell'Oro Group has launched two new programs tracking the sales of equipment used to connect subscribers to the Internet or Corporate Network using Cable Modem and DSL technology.

According to the 1Q99 reports, the Cable Modem market revenue (both Headend equipment and Client Modems) grew 14% during 1Q99 and the DSL market grew 51%.

The Cable Modem market is a classic ''pull'' market, where end user demand bolsters market sales. During 1998, 38 client modems shipped for every receive port shipped on a Headend device. During 1999 we expect that ratio to drop to 26, as Cable Modem service providers catch up with end user demand by installing more receive ports to increase the quality of service.

The DSL market is a classic ''push'' market, where vendors try to create end user demand. Service providers are deploying DSLAMs in central office widely and rapidly. During 1999, we expect DSL market sales to increase four-fold. Sales of DSLAM equipment are projected to continue to outpace sales of customer premises DSL modems by a factor of 2 to 1.

Both reports reflect revenue, unit/port shipments, and pricing on a vendor-by-vendor basis.

The Dell'Oro Group is a research and consulting firm specializing in business planning and strategic competitive analysis in the networking industry.
