Maybe I am just complacent. I admit that's a possibility. But I think that some people are trashy, and others plant trees and pick up trash and broken glass, and don't make trash or broken glass in the first place. I contemplate Roger and Betty, next door, and I don't care how poor they were, they'd sweep their sidewalk and pick up the trash around their house. And the guy on the other side is just a pig.

It's not a race thing, either, when I lived in New Orleans, my house was about on the borderline between a ritzy white neighborhood and a poor mixed black and white neighborhood. And the black people picked up the trash and swept the sidewalk and planted trees just like the white people did. In that neighborhood, and others.

I think it has to do with both nature and nurture. Some people are orderly, clean and co-operative, and some are disorderly and uncooperative and destructive, and foul their own nests.
