Market researchers are generally thoughtless lemmings that do projections based on two things: trendline and surveys...

Four things. The two you mentioned, and two more: what the client who commissioned the report wants to hear (how far do you want us to bend over?); what other researchers are saying (see yours and raise you 10% CAGR).
