I don't say it always has to be economic- but I think in many conflicts- if you go back far enough- you WILL find an economic root. Most often land. From what I have seen of Macedonia the land does not look like it is very productive. It looks like life is hard there- I don't know about Serbia. It seems to me that resource conflicts- over land- could easily erupt in such a place. It can be productive (motivationally) to label as nationalistic or religious, a conflict that is economic at heart. We saw the effect of that in the Gulf war. Primarily about oil and Persian Gulf hegemony (imo) but sold quite differently at home.
