MB, Kobe Steel is trying to jam up the Dresdner guy.

Dow Jones Newswires
Kobe Steel: Dresdner Analyst Report "Distributing Rumor"

TOKYO -- Kobe Steel Ltd. (J.KOB or 5406), a major Japanese steelmaker, said Friday that it notified Japan's Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission that an analyst report issued by Dresdner Kleinwort Benson "amounts to the 'distribution of rumor'."

I guess Business Week's Gene Marcial won't be moving to Japan anytime soon.

The report made untrue statements including an assertion that KMT Semiconductor Ltd., Kobe Steel's joint venture with Micron Technology Inc. (MU), will be forced to halt production for several months because of chip-design flaws, said Gary Tsuchida, a Kobe Steel spokesman.

A. That doesn't answer the question of whether or not they're having problems.

B. "...for several months" - is this a variation on Clinton's Gennifer Flowers denial. The Flowers story was "untrue" because the affair didn't last X years, as opposed to Y years.

"We believe the report was based on rumors and so notified the SESC," Tsuchida said. He added that Dresdner failed to contact Kobe Steel, KMT Semiconductor, or Micron Technology when writing the report.

What's a "rumor"?
Information that doesn't get prior Company approval?

Dresdner Kleinwort Benson officials in Tokyo weren't immediately available for comment.

Kobe Steel said the report was written by a Tokyo-based semiconductor analyst and only appeared in Japanese. It was released on July 5.

Why don't they just come flat-out and deny it?

Something like: "No customers have received defective parts; we have not been contacted by customers claiming to have a defective part; and we are having absolutely no problems whatsoever."

Good trading,

Tom

..tick up in DRAM prices ... MHO -

lowest price at last week of Q2 end when they had to move product to get revenues. Q3 first week, revenue pressure all gone, big boyz raised Q2 end fire-sale price and put product/production back on shelf instead. Hoping for end of summer seasonal upturn to get better supply/demand and keep prices 'up' later.

If they are wrong, watch out below when all the stock-piled products gets dumped again at Q3 end.

>>There also seems to be a huge short squeeze.<<

Maybe so. I would hate to be a short having to cover next week in the high $50's and the weeks after that in the $60's. Laydown your arms putters and shorts, the "war" is over and ye have all lost. If longs, as you claim, are ignoring financials, then why would they care about the latest Dram pricing?
