Bell Atlantic Increases Managed Services
(07/09/99, 9:24 a.m. ET)
By Chuck Moozakis, InternetWeek
Bell Atlantic is tweaking its managed services portfolio, making iteasier for data administrators to oversee their frame relay and ATM networks.

The carrier has rolled out its managed data network services (MDNS) unit, aimed at IT managers who want Bell Atlantic to handle most of the day-to-day administration of their dedicated networks.

Jeff Crowder, program director at Net.Work.Virginia at Virginia Tech University, said MDNS will be a boon as the school adds offices to its statewide ATM network.

"This will help us be cost-effective," Crowder said. "We won't have to add staff or resources, and we can be more efficient."

MDNS will let IT managers take functions such as ordering, scheduling, maintenance, and management of their data networks and funnel them through a single entity, said MDNS project manager Jim Dorsey.

"It will make it much easier for managers to get all their services under a single umbrella," Dorsey said.

Bell Atlantic's first MDNS offering is FrameView, which is geared toward the carrier's frame relay customers. The service, which will rely on Visual Networks' Visual UpTime monitoring system, lets IT managers assess their network's performance via a Web browser or GUI on a dedicated machine.

FrameView will be followed by similar managed ATM offerings later this summer, Dorsey said.

MDNS will likely play a key role as Bell Atlantic moves closer to completing its $52.8 billion purchase of GTE, permitting the telco to offer a unified managed menu of services from both companies. GTE has beefed up its own stable of managed services, most recently adding network-to-network interface support to its Frame Watch frame relay service.

"[MDNS should make it] easier for companies to see how all of these service components fit together," said Yankee Group analyst Michele Pelino.

Additionally, the new service may also help the carrier reposition itself as an infrastructure provider, Pelino said.

"Bell Atlantic is known as a telco, but now there is room for it to grow and improve in the managed service arena," she said.

Bell Atlantic said FrameView is $65 to $175 per month per circuit, depending upon contract length and throughput. These charges are in addition to monthly frame relay fees.
