PB, re Merced, IA64, this is a big deal in that it's Intel's first jump in word size since going to the 386 in 1985:

Just as significant is the fact that Merced is a major new architecture. There will be tons of questions to answer like how is it going to perform along with its OSs and compilers, and compete vs. S390, SPARC and Alpha (tempted to say Alphalpha for that DEC guy that drops in). And, of course, it will put IBM and Sun out of business, according to some thread members. ;-) Well, I haven't heard that about Sun, but that's only because they will support Solaris on it, make a little money that way. Should be fun.
