That is so true. There are parts of the Iliad and the Odyssey and the Aeneid (and Beowulf) that I like- but mostly I feel sorry for who ever happens to be in trouble at the time (including Grendel- I felt really sorry for Grendel). I don't think I like heroes. I like the Gods because they are so squabbly and unheroic. But the real heroes I do not like. I am glad they have their fatal flaws and get destroyed (for the most part).
