Skeeter: Whether the secretary "wants" an application is rarely the determining factor of whether she gets it or not. That is the brilliance of suites of programs - there is so much stuff on the systems now that the IT guys feel they have to support it..so business never buys the basic machine. Why do so? Buy the system which can be expanded and which can handle, in a couple of years, the likely needs of the corporate network/apps.

Sorry to again use the simplistic analogy - Rambus does not need the Gateway customer to be successful - it needs the Dell customer.

dell design
Dell has multiple lines of computers. Some are designed by Dell, these are models in which Dell guarentees that the same configuration and parts can be bought over a period of years, hence Dell needs full control of design & suppliers & manufacturing. Some motherboards come from suppliers, typically Intel.
