Borders Online president resigns

ANN ARBOR, Mich., July 28 (Reuters) - Borders Group Inc. said Wednesday the president of its Borders Online Inc. unit, Cedric Vanzura, has resigned to pursue another opportunity.

Borders Group chairman, president and chief executive Bob DiRomualdo said in a statement that Borders Online will continue to report to him as the company moves forward with its retail ''convergence'' strategy.

Borders, which was slow to get on the Internet with a mid-1998 start, said the positie momentum of the first quarter continued in the second.

The company said preliminary second quarter figures indicate Borders.com sales increased to $3.3 million, or about 600 percent over the same quarter last year.

Borders said same-store superstores sales (excluding non-prototype store) increased around 4.4 percent during the second quarter while Waldenbooks same-store sales fell about 1.9 percent.
