My wife and I own one computer. The two of us each use it. If we had kids, you'd include them.

Don,

The 50-60% number is "households with a computer", and I actually believe it is a bit higher than most in the industry use today.

Lots of things in those numbers to make one suspect:

(Translating into percentages here, rather than the mythical "people"):

6% of the worlds population owns 59% of the assets. OK I buy that.

All of those 6% are from the US. Not even remotely possible. US population is approximately 250 million, World population approximately 6 billion. Only 4% of the world's people live in the US in the first place!

I could go deeper, but that should give you an idea of the number's accuracy...

Re:Fascinating analysis but one point of contention. How do we get 6 people from the US but only 1 owns a computer. I thought the US number was about 50-60%, which means 3 out of 100 would own a computer based on US contribution alone. Still - it makes a very good point.

What's the cliche...there are lies, big lies, and then statistics? Another apparent oddity: Doesn't it seem odd that of the 6 that own 59% of the wealth, but have only ONE computer between them also only have ONE college diploma between them (or only one college education, more accurately) I think something strange happened when these numbers were "distilled" down to 100, huh??

Either that...or were perpetuating yet another lame urban legend.
