The Other Y2K Problem - GlobalOptions discussion

c-span.org

This panel discussion took place in Washington D.C. on Thursday, July 8, 1999. The discussion focuses on the terrorist aspect of Y2K.

A couple of interesting things came out. For example, the group is concerned about an increase in office violence. As social, professional and family pressure increase from Y2K induces problems, the panel warns businesses to be watchful for outbreaks of violence.

The panel also suggests having 60 days of cash on hand.

This is a fairly long event (almost 2 hours), but I found a couple of parts that made listening to it worthwhile. I particular liked the list and samples of what they thought people should have on hand for Y2K disruptions. Most of their suggestions have been expanded on here.

I also liked what one of the former Navy officers had to say about preparing for Y2K. He explained that as a sailor, he wouldn't even consider going to sea without a life raft, even though he hoped to never use it. He felt that making preparations for Y2K disruptions was very similar to going to sea. The preparations that you make now will be your life raft in Y2K, just hope that you never have to use them.
