You must be joking. In one sentence you stated "Sun's servers are much better" and then add "they are not suitable for running mission critical tasks". Well which one is it?

There are many variables to high end servers and the more complicated the system, the more difficult it can be to restore service. One should also consider how prepared for disaster were the companies that had trouble? I think it's very easy to point a finger at the hardware supplier when there is trouble. How well the system is designed from a software, hardware, backup/restoration, etc. perspective is the key to success. Often it's easier to repair the hardware then it is to rebuild all the database issues.

Understand that I haven't looked into either situation you mention and I'm only talking from a theoretical view.

1. Sun isn't mentioned.

2. It doesn't say servers went down.

3. It does say the web site stayed up and running at all
times, but trades didn't go through for several hours

4. It says 575,000 trades a day happen on the internet and the
infrastructure of ALL brokers is stressed, resulting in outages
of ALL brokers.

5. The problem is described as a "communications interruption".

All these new internet discount brokers don't execute trades themselves. They don't have people on the floor. They send trades by wire to other companies that specialize in fast volume executions. I would guess that what happened was that the link to their execution service was interrupted somehow. Could have been a SUN communications board. Could have been a phone company switch. Nobody knows, because the company did not give out details. "Nobody" includes you. Yet you've got it figured out that it's a Sun problem?
