This IMO is the underlying reason.

I don't want to diminish the many good things happening to S3, but
the recovery of the semiconductor market has got to be driving it.

S3 is still way undervalued, given its intrinsic value.

Was their stake in UMC worth $600 million a few weeks ago, if prices
are being raised another healthy 20 %, S3's stake ought to add at least
another $2s or so a share.

I think the market is now finally realizing the inherent value of S3's
fab stake for the company. ALSC about doubled over the past 4 weeks.

My guess is that once everybody starts jumping on the bandwagon, we may
see the 20s before the year is done, especially if earning continue to
improve, and they should.
