"A stringed instrument in which sound is produced by the friction of a rosined wheel turned by a crank against the strings and the pitches are varied by keys."

Basically, one of those hand cranked barrel organs played by itinerant musicians. Haven't seen one in awhile.

An Italian fellow used to walk around our neighborhood in New Orleans, playing a hurdy-gurdy. He had a capuchin monkey with a little red hat. The monkey would go up to children in the crowd with his hat upside down, collecting pennies, and then throw the pennies into the organ-grinder's music case.
