The point is..it's not a step up, it's a step down.

So... I figured I'd try an experiment with a friend who was here as I read those words. He isn't familiar with SI and only occasionally uses the web. He has, however, worked in the book and magazine business for years but is not a designer himself.

I put that message in the beta side-by-side on the screen with the same message in the classic SI. His response: "Well, there's no comparison. Clearly, the [beta] is a more appealing design." He thought the classic design might be better if one used it mainly for something other than reading the message, but thought the new design gave more emphasis to the message. I asked him which one was the newer design and he immediately identified the beta as newer and "improved".
