Very true. Even with the auger on the tractor, there were spots and times that you about burned the whole thing up trying to dig. Around my folks is some deep red clay. I think the shale breaks easier than it after its baked real good.

Rock/clay, wet, dry, right there with you. I believe short of a jackhammer the only way to deal with taht is with dynamite. But you have to drill the charge hole.

Makes me want to get licensed to own and operate small amounts of commercial explosives. But I figure in CA that's tougher than getting a permit to carry a firearm.
