Let's not forget that in about 4 months when the k7's switch to .18 that power dissipation is going to drop DRAMATICALLY.

<That's a really bad example. It seems Paul was pretty much right on with his estimate of 60W at 600MHz. GlobalWin (maker of cooling equipment) has a page up that lists the heat dissipation for the K7 (as well as the P3 and the Celery):

Man, you are generous. Being is 20% off isn't pretty much right, and if my memory serves me right the debate was about 550 MHz K7 - so it is more than 20% delta.

My contention at the time this debate was going on was that the 60W number Paul kept referring to was for 700 MHz and K7 is designed for speeds much higher than 550 and would not have any problems at 550.

During this time Paul spewed the FUD about heat problems and how K7 was "unmanufacturable".

I don't think anyone expected PIII and K7 power dissipations to be comparable so this particular data point is of no consequence - at least for me.

The only place larger power dissipation makes a lot of difference is in laptops and I expect K7 laptop chips to happen only after 180nm and that too many speed grades under the desktop product line.
