"Just be patient" ok. on another topic: Microsoft Redesigns Hotmail E-Mail for Ease, Speed (Update2) Redmond, Washington, July 9 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp. said it redesigned Hotmail, its free e-mail service that has 40 million users, to be faster and easier to use as the world's biggest software maker boosts efforts to compete with America Online Inc. Microsoft removed high-resolution graphics from the Web pages to speed their downloading, and features such as message search are displayed more prominently. The upgrade is the most sweeping since Hotmail started its service three years ago. Microsoft is using Hotmail as the cornerstone of e-mail services on its MSN network of Web sites, and it plans to add features such as online personal organizers and instant messaging, which alerts users when friends are online. Still, too many features could bog down the service, analysts said. ''Hotmail is doing a great job, and they don't need to turn it into a feature-laden service,'' said Bruce Kasrel, an analyst at Forrester Research Inc. ''If it ain't broke, don't fix it.'' Hotmail is based on the Internet, rather than an individual personal computer or corporate network, so users can send and receive e-mail for free from any PC with a Web browser. Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft bought Hotmail in December 1997, when it had 9.5 million subscribers, for about $300 million. Since then, America Online, the No. 1 online service, and Internet content producer Cnet Inc. have unveiled free e-mail services. AOL has more than 17 million subscribers who pay a monthly fee for Internet access, e-mail and content. Hotmail's new design is available in the service's four languages -- English, French, German and Japanese, Microsoft said. Microsoft shares today rose 11/16 to 93 1/4. ©1999 Bloomberg L.P. i am a satisfied yahoo email user. regards
