You make great points about upgrades to functionality, but let me stick to the design issue for a moment:

It is hard to call this a 'new' design. It looks a lot like some other boards. It seems like SI is now copying other formats...others used to copy SI.

I suspect that others will once again copy SI if this design is rolled out as is. The reason others "used to copy SI" and probably don't any more is because its design had become dated and awkward. The redesign changes that by embracing some excellent design concepts that have been missed by other message-board sites.

But is it just like other boards? A number of folks have said that, but so far only one board has been offered that's even vaguely similar to the beta. That's StockHouse which has been suggested several times (as he is wont to do) by CheekyKid.
(http://www.stockhouse.com/bullboards/viewmessage.asp?no=146889&pg=1)... [Couldn't resist picking that message.]

What's similar? Well the message is contained in a white unboxed area with darker regions above and below. But there are serious problems with their design that do not infect the SI design. Despite the vague similarity, only the graphically inept could fail to recognize which page is SI and which belongs to the other outfit.

Several folks have mentioned Yahoo's boards as being models for this. This one baffles me. There is virtually no design commonality between the two sites. Yahoo is Weekly World News to SI's New York Times.

If this were such a rank copy, somebody should be able to find a message board that incorporates most of the same design principles, but so far it hasn't been found.

(And nobody has even mentioned that the recently redesigned Hotmail uses the same basic colors. The blue is the same, but they use only the lighter olive shade. Despite that common feature, the two sites are easily distinguished.)
