IRIDIUM PROVIDES CERTAIN Y2K COMMUNICATION (NASDAQ: IRID) (via I* yahoo thread)iridium.com (Sydney, Australia, July 8, 1999) Australian businesses working on Year 2000 readiness can now organise telecommunications contingencies with more certainty after Iridium LLC and Motorola announced the Iridium satellite network is Y2K ready. The Iridium network does not depend on others' networks or switching equipment to send calls between one Iridium phone and another. Voice communication between two Iridium phones utilises Iridium's network of 66 low-Earth orbiting satellites and its 12 earth stations around the world. (Refer to diagram attached) Iridium South Pacific's 'home' earth station has been fully audited, tested and upgraded for international Year 2000 readiness requirements. All Iridium earth stations will be Y2K ready by the end of July, and each has self-supporting utility sources. Iridium will provide companies or individuals concerned with the potential failure of land-based telecommunications networks or supporting utilities with peace of mind at the turn of the century. Companies around the world have indicated they want to be sure of having the best chance of communicating during the critical Y2K period and Iridium can give that comfort. Use of Iridium's satellite communication network as a Year 2000 contingency has already contributed to sales in some of Australia's public utilities including telecommunications, oil & gas, electricity and water, and has captured the interest of other local industries gearing up their millennium preparations such as air transport, government departments, emergency services and law enforcement agencies. On July 1, as part of a competitive new charging structure designed to sharpen value for customers, Iridium reduced the price of all satellite calls made by Iridium South Pacific customers from an Iridium phone to another Iridium phone anywhere in the world1 to just A$1.07 per 30 seconds. Iridium South Pacific, in addition to offering reduced equipment packages, has now made Iridium equipment available under an operating lease, which reduces up-front capital expenditure on communication equipment. Iridium South Pacific customers can now access an Iridium phone for only A$23.05 per week over 48 months. Short-term phone rental is also available from select Iridium dealers. The world's first truly global communication network, Iridium's 66 low-Earth-orbiting satellites combine with land-based cellular networks, enabling customers to communicate anywhere in the world1 using one phone, one phone number, and receiving one monthly bill. Customers access the Iridium satellite network when outside cellular coverage or when land-based telecommunications services are unavailable. Service activation is available through Iridium or through Iridium's comprehensive dealer network and roaming partners Optus and Telstra. 1Pending national government approval Note: This statement of Iridium South Pacific Pty Ltd's Year 2000 Readiness is made for the purposes of the Year 2000 Information Disclosure Act 1999.
