Caroline, I sympathize with your perspective. When I first clicked over to the beta site it felt like I had clicked my TV remote control from Charles Kuralt to MTV or Capitol Gang. I've read the demographics on SI, so perhaps most members prefer MTV, but I still mourn Charles Kuralt. I found the beta to be loud and frantic and crowded. Since too many SI posters are already "overstimulated," I think the level of discourse would be improved by a more mellow look and feel.

However,

I worked my way through it and have gotten used to it. At first I resented being told that the beta was more intuitive since I had to resort to bookmarking the site map to get from where I was to where I wanted to go. But much of that has been fixed or I have learned the workaround. For example, I was frustrated that I couldn't get directly from a message about a stock's earnings to the earnings page, but now those links are on the quote bar. I was frustrated I couldn't get directly into subject marks, but now the security lets me.

The new version has some nice features, they've fixed most of the bugs so it's more intuitive than at the unveiling, and the cutover is inevitable so it makes sense to learn the workarounds and get on with it. If you read the first new message and it says "I agree with all of what's been said" but you can't remember what's been said and want to read the last 10 messages, you simply click on "next 10" from which you can get to "previous 10." Not elegant, but workable.

I still wish they would fix that nasty green color and I'd love to see the designers browse the site for a while in I.E. with the font set at large and do something about the spacing, but I'm coping. I suggest you take a deep breath and give it another try. I won't suggest it will grow on you, but it will at least become bearable background noise over time.
