Analysts Earnings Forecast

Where and how do the analysts come up with the earnings forecast?
IMHO, they are just like me and you, guesstimate. How do they guess? They go to the CEO (or CFO) and ask for guidance. Get the projected sales figure and estimated COGS and come up with EBIT. I have to stressed that only the CEO knows the inside story of the firm. Therefore, the information that she/he provide to the analysts has to be pretty much in the ball park. Sometimes, firms issue earning warning just to maintain their credibility. Because if you give rosy forecast and mislead the analysts, the Street will not forget and forgive. Your firms will be in the doldrum for a long long time. The way I see this is to apply to any firm and E*Trade is no exception. I feel pretty comfortable with the forecast because they have done a marvellous job to convey the information to the Street ant that is prudent.
