ATT wants all ISPs who like to rent the pipe to accept
ATHM's screen as their member's log-in first screen,
AOL wants the first screen to be AOL's.

I consider this part of your post to be highly inaccurate. @home has no control over the log-in screen other than it is the default home page when the software is installed (if you choose to install @home software at all). It is completely different than how AOL works.

You are correct however in saying that AT&T and AOL have fundamental differences to overcome.

The basic issue is that AT&T wants AOL to put up some money to help build the infrastructure and to share in some of the AOL advertising revenue stream. In other words AT&T (&ATHM) want to be partners with AOL sharing the risk and reward.

AOL wants none of that. They want no risk and all the reward by simply offering $x/month/customer. Cant blame Case for wanting it that way, nor can I blame T/ATHM for not going along with it.

Long both ATHM and AOL
